Facebook Connect: Oculus Quest 2, AAA Gaming Partnerships, and More
Oculus VR
Today at Facebook Connect, we announced Oculus Quest 2, our highest performance VR headset ever. From cutting-edge VR headsets to all-day wearable AR glasses, we talked about building the future. Check out some of the highlights below.
INTRODUCING QUEST2
We announced Oculus Quest 2—the next generation of all-in-one VR. It has our highest resolution display ever, weighs less than the original Quest, and starts at just $299 USD. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform processor and 6GB of memory to power even more immersive experiences, with newly redesigned controllers for better ergonomics and longer battery life. Quest 2 is compatible with the Quest library of content and can play Rift Platform games with Oculus Link for an up-leveled PC VR experience. It will also support a selection of optional accessories, including customizable head straps and facial interfaces, that help you find the best fit for you. Pre-orders open today, and Quest 2 will ship October 13. Click here to learn more.
OCULUS LINK GENERAL AVAILABILITY
Oculus Link already lets people use a compatible gaming PC to play Rift Platform titles on their Oculus Quest headset. We announced that Oculus Link will exit beta this fall and that, in the future, it will support 90 fps for improved PC VR gameplay. And next year, we’ll introduce a new UI that shows your Rift Platform games and Quest titles in the same place to make it easier to navigate your VR library and let you access native Quest features while using Link.
CONTENT NEWS
We shared that people have spent more than $150M on Quest content to date. More than 35 titles have generated revenue in the millions since launching on Quest. This summer, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted hit the $1M mark in just over a week while Onward achieved the same milestone in just four days—a new record for the platform.
We shared IN PROTEST, a series of 360° videos spotlighting the unsung heroes responding to the recent racial injustices in America. We announced that two of Ubisoft’s AAA franchises are coming to VR with new, made-for-VR entries in the Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell universes. And coming later this year, step foot onto Isla Nublar in Jurassic World Aftermath, from the Universal Games and Digital Platforms team and Coatsink Games. From Beat Saber’s impending multiplayer update and TinyTAN x Beat Saber | BTS Music Pack to the December 11 release date of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, the keynote was jam-packed with exciting game news. OCULUS MOVE, A NEW FITNESS EXPERIENCE
We’ve seen our community increasingly using VR to stay active while at home, so today we introduced Oculus Move, a system-level fitness tracker that helps you keep tabs on how many calories you burn and how long you’ve been physically active during a VR play session. It lets you select VR fitness goals and track them across any app, with real-time stats and in-game overlays. We’ll start rolling Oculus Move out to select users on the Quest Platform later this year.
NEW SOCIAL EXPERIENCES
Today, we announced that Messenger is coming to the Quest Platform in the coming months, making it easier to coordinate with friends and play together in VR. You’ll be able to invite friends to join you in VR with Messenger, and they can quickly jump in the same game with you. You’ll also be able to chat with friends anywhere they have Messenger, without taking off your headset.
We’re also introducing new Oculus Avatars, which build on the visual style seen in Horizon and Venues (Beta Early Access). We’ll also be rolling out a new Avatar SDK so developers can use the new system, which will eventually replace today’s Oculus Avatars. Over time, we’ll work to let you use your Avatar across the Facebook family of apps.
We also introduced Challenges, which let you create mini-tournaments for your friends and the VR community. Developers can create their own featured challenges, starting with Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, and Synth Riders. They’ll have new challenges available weekly, so you can compete to be the best of the best. Challenges begin rolling out on Quest today, and they’ll be available on Quest 2 when it ships in October.
THE FUTURE OF WORK AND PRODUCTIVITY ON QUEST
We introduced Infinite Office—a collection of new capabilities designed to create a virtual office space that will feel more productive and flexible.
Features include a vast working space with multiple customizable screens—no extra monitors required—while Oculus Browser gives you a desktop-class web experience. It will integrate with your real environment and be portable and persistent, so you can easily pick things up right where you left off. To enhance focus and flexibility, you can even toggle between a fully immersive experience and a mix of virtual displays with Passthrough for a greater awareness of your surroundings. And we announced a partnership with Logitech to bring a physical keyboard into VR.
We’ll begin rolling out the first Infinite Office features as an experimental release for Quest 2 this winter. We also shared our intention to open these key technologies, including Passthrough, to developers to invite them to explore how and where to enable mixed reality in their apps. We’ve already started early experiments with third parties including Spatial, which shows how Passthrough could enhance a virtual co-located meeting. There’s more in store, and we’re excited to share what’s next.
OCULUS FOR BUSINESS
Whether you run a small or medium-sized business or you work at a Fortune 500 company, Oculus for Business can help you work better. In addition to launching the new enterprise edition of Quest 2, we’re rolling out new resources to help companies get started and help developers meet this growing demand, including a new vendor directory and business channels designed specifically for app distribution directly to administrators. 15+ SESSIONS FOR DEVELOPERS
We have more than 15 sessions where developers can learn about improvements that have been made to simplify and streamline the development process, expand distribution, build community, and more. Visit the Oculus Developer Blog to learn more.
BEYOND VR
We also shared some exciting news on the road to AR glasses, from momentum for our Spark AR creator platform to a new multi-year partnership with EssilorLuxottica. Next year we’ll deliver the first product, a pair of Ray-Ban branded smart glasses. We also introduced our vision to build an AR glasses interface that will fundamentally change the way we interact with and experience the digital world—an interface that, for the first time, puts us at the center of our technology, rather than requiring us to adapt to it. As part of that, we unveiled Project Aria—a research device that will help us understand how to build the software and hardware necessary to truly deliver on the promise of ubiquitous AR.
